Privacy Policy

Introduction

Linclaw Consulting AB operates Ember Books, an iOS application for interactive, choice-driven stories in which you are the main character. Stories can be played on your own or together with friends in a shared session. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it.

Information We Collect

Information you provide

  • An opaque Apple user identifier when you sign in with Apple — a random string assigned by Apple that identifies your account. We do not receive or store your name or email address.
  • Your persona — a display name and pronouns you choose, and optional preferences such as favourite genres, tropes, and a content-comfort setting, used to personalise your stories.
  • Your gameplay input — the choices you select and any free text you type to direct the story.
  • Reports — content or players you report, and reasons you provide, through the in-app reporting tools.

Information collected automatically

  • Story progress — your sessions, the beats generated for you, and story state, saved to our servers so you can continue on any signed-in device.
  • Energy & subscription state — your energy balance and, if you subscribe to Ember+, your subscription tier, renewal/expiry date, and Apple transaction identifiers, stored to run the in-app economy and verify entitlements.
  • Purchase records — energy packs and subscriptions bought through the Apple App Store, including the Apple transaction ID, stored so we can verify and restore your purchases.
  • Usage analytics — app opens and in-app events such as starting or continuing a story, used in aggregate to improve the app. Never sold or shared with advertisers.
  • Device token — if you enable notifications, an Apple Push Notification token so we can alert you when it is your turn in a multiplayer story.
  • Device information — iOS version and device type, used for debugging.

Playing With Others

When you play a multiplayer story (Duet or Party), the sessions are private and joined by invite. Within a session, your persona display name and the moves you make are shared with the other players so the shared story can unfold. You can leave a session at any time, block another player, or report content or a player. We keep records of blocks and reports to keep the experience safe. We do not make your gameplay public or share it outside your session.

How We Use Your Information

  • To generate and deliver your interactive story, including a personalised, second-person view for each player in a multiplayer session.
  • To save and restore your story progress across devices when you are signed in with Apple.
  • To run the energy economy and to verify and restore purchases and Ember+ subscriptions.
  • To send you notifications about multiplayer stories, if you have enabled them.
  • To screen free-text input, review reports, and keep the community safe.
  • To analyse usage in aggregate and improve the app.
  • To comply with our legal obligations.

We do not use your data to display advertisements. Ember Books contains no ads and no third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.

AI-Generated Content & Moderation

Stories in Ember Books are generated in real time by Claude, Anthropic's AI, running via AWS Bedrock. The choices you select and any free text you type are sent to our servers and processed by the model to produce the next part of the story. Free-text input is also screened by an automated moderation step before it is used. This content is processed to operate the service and is not used to train Anthropic's foundation models. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on servers operated by Linclaw Consulting AB, hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS Lightsail) in the EU. We use industry-standard encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest. Some content is also cached locally on your device.

We retain account data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion at any time (see Your Rights below).

Third-Party Services

  • Apple App Store / StoreKit — processes all payments. Apple's privacy policy governs their handling of payment data.
  • Sign in with Apple — we request only an opaque user identifier from Apple; we do not request your name or email address.
  • Apple Push Notification service — used to deliver multiplayer notifications if you enable them.
  • AWS / Anthropic (Claude) — story generation and content moderation. Data is processed in accordance with AWS and Anthropic's data processing agreements.

We do not use advertising networks, analytics SDKs, or cross-app tracking.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information. We share data only with the other players in a multiplayer session you have joined (as described in "Playing With Others"), with the service providers listed above, or when required by law.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Request deletion of your account and all associated data. In-app: Settings → Delete account. By email: see Contact below.
  • Export your data.
  • Withdraw consent for notifications at any time in your device settings.
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (for EU residents, the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection — IMY).

As a Swedish company we process EU residents' data under the GDPR. The legal bases for processing are performance of a contract (operating the app and features you use), legitimate interest (safety, fraud prevention, and improving the service), and consent (notifications).

Age

Ember Books is rated 17+ and is intended for adults. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 17. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes through the app. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
